Our Story

The Brand Tanzania Initiative (BTI) was born from efforts led by Hon. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, then President of Tanzania, to analyze the country's image and undertake massive marketing of Tanzania's attractions. In 2012, a team of marketing experts from government and private entities was convened to craft sharp, mobilizing messages to instill patriotism among Tanzanians at a time when the nation faced image challenges, low tourism performance, and social issues such as youth drug abuse and governance scandals.

Initially, BTI operated as a seven-member national branding team appointed by the President, coordinated by Hon. Rajab Omary Luhwavi. The team conducted extensive research, workshops, training, strategic visits, and literature reviews, presenting the first draft of the National Branding Strategy in 2014.

First BTI Team: Hon. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete (Patron), Prof. Egnald P. Mihanjo (Chairman), Fadhil Nkhuru, Lusekelo Nelson, Fancy Nkuhi, Lucas Mahundi, Julius Rugemalila
